All the details about your upcoming adventure in one place
Perched on the tip of the Lavedo peninsula, Villa del Balbianello is an earthly paradise that commands breathtaking views of Lake Como. Originally built for a Cardinal in the 18th century, its last private owner, the intrepid explorer Guido Monzino, bequeathed the estate to the FAI (National Trust of Italy). Today, visitors can explore its magnificent terraced gardens, where perfectly manicured lawns, classical statues, and ancient trees create a symphony of green against the blue of the lake. The villa itself houses Monzino's incredible collection of art and expedition mementos. Instantly recognizable from its starring roles in films like 'Casino Royale' and 'Star Wars', a visit to Balbianello is a step into a world of elegance, adventure, and cinematic history.

April to October. Spring (April-May) offers vibrant rhododendrons and azaleas. Summer (June-August) is warm and lush, perfect for lake views. Autumn (September-October) provides comfortable temperatures and beautiful fall colors. The villa is typically closed from mid-November to mid-March.
Comfortable, sturdy walking shoes are non-negotiable, especially if you plan to walk the path from Lenno|Dress in layers; the temperature by the lake can be cooler than in town, even on a sunny day|Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen as many parts of the garden are exposed to the sun|A light rain jacket is wise in spring and autumn as weather can change quickly.
The villa's origins trace back to 1787 when Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini built a summer retreat on the peninsula. In the 20th century, it was owned by American businessman Butler Ames before being purchased in 1974 by the renowned Italian explorer and entrepreneur, Guido Monzino. Monzino, leader of the first Italian expedition to Mount Everest, meticulously renovated the villa and filled it with artifacts from his travels. Upon his death in 1988, he bequeathed the entire estate to the FAI, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
Real experiences from real travelers
Booking our tickets online was the best decision. We walked past a long queue of people hoping to get in. The villa is even more stunning in person than in the movies. Every corner of the garden is a perfect photograph. The guided tour of the house was fascinating, offering a glimpse into the life of Guido Monzino. Worth every euro!
My husband and I visited for our anniversary. We took the water taxi from Lenno, and the approach to the villa from the water is breathtaking. The gardens are immaculate. We felt like we were in 'Casino Royale.' A must-do when in Lake Como. Booking through the platform was easy and we received our tickets instantly.
The views are 5-star, no question. Truly one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. Just a word of warning: the walk from Lenno is seriously steep! Wear good shoes. If you have any mobility issues, you MUST take the boat. The timed entry system works well to manage crowds.
The gardens are the main event here, absolutely spectacular. We spent two hours just wandering and taking photos. The guided tour of the villa felt a bit rushed and crowded, it was hard to hear the guide at times. I would recommend the garden-only ticket if you are short on time or prefer to avoid crowds.
I came here because I am a big Star Wars fan, and it did not disappoint. Standing on the terrace where Anakin and Padmé were married was a magical moment. The gardens are so peaceful and perfectly maintained. Booking was simple, and the QR code on my phone worked without any problems at the entrance.
My family and I underestimated the walk from Lenno in the August heat. It was challenging! The villa and gardens are magnificent, though. The views are just insane. My advice: spend the extra money for the water taxi. It makes the experience much more enjoyable and the arrival is spectacular.
Everything you need to know for your trip
Yes, absolutely. Villa del Balbianello is one of Lake Como's most popular attractions, and capacity is limited. Booking your tickets online in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak season (May to September), on weekends, and for holidays. Pre-booking guarantees your entry for a specific time slot and helps you avoid the disappointment of finding tickets sold out upon arrival.
A standard entry ticket typically grants you access to the magnificent gardens only. To see the interior of the Villa, including the stunning collections of explorer Guido Monzino, you must book a ticket that explicitly includes a guided tour of the Villa's interior. These are timed and have smaller group sizes, so booking even further in advance is crucial.
You have two main options. The most scenic is by water taxi from the town of Lenno, which drops you directly at the villa's private dock. Alternatively, you can walk from Lenno. This involves a beautiful but steep 1-kilometer (about 0.6 miles) uphill walk through the woods, which takes approximately 25-30 minutes.
Unfortunately, due to its historic nature and location on a steep promontory, Villa del Balbianello has significant accessibility challenges. The walking path is steep and uneven, and both the gardens and the Villa itself contain numerous stairs and narrow passages. It is not recommended for visitors with mobility impairments or those who require a wheelchair.
Photography and video for personal use are generally permitted in the gardens. However, inside the Villa, photography, video, and the use of flash or tripods are strictly prohibited to protect the delicate artifacts and interiors. Always look for signage and follow the instructions of the staff.
We recommend allocating at least 2 to 3 hours for your visit. This allows for about 45-60 minutes for the guided tour of the Villa interior, and another 1.5 to 2 hours to leisurely explore the different levels of the terraced gardens, take photos, and simply soak in the breathtaking views.
The villa is at its most beautiful from late April to early October. Spring (April-May) offers stunning floral blooms, including azaleas and rhododendrons. Summer (June-August) provides warm, sunny weather perfect for enjoying the lake views. Early autumn (September-October) brings pleasant temperatures and beautiful foliage colours.
There is a small gift shop and a refreshment area near the entrance that sells drinks and light snacks like ice cream. However, there is no full-service restaurant or café on the property. Picnics are not permitted within the gardens to preserve their pristine condition.
Villa del Balbianello is a movie star! It was famously featured as the lakeside clinic where James Bond recovers in 'Casino Royale' (2006) and as the location for Anakin and Padmé's wedding on the planet Naboo in 'Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones' (2002).
